1/30/2019 11:37:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
MALIBU, Calif. – Four CSUN hitters reached double figures in kills but sixth-ranked Pepperdine held off the No. 12 Matadors in four sets in a non-conference match Wednesday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The 25-23, 25-27, 25-18, 25-22 win improves Pepperdine to 6-2 while the Matadors drop their fourth straight to fall to 5-5. Each loss in CSUN's current streak has come to a team ranked in the AVCA Top-15.
KEY STATISTICS
• Junior Ksaery Tomsia paced CSUN with 13 kills, hitting .324 on a team-high 34 swings.

COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We played very well at times. We hit .342 against the No. 6 team in the country and we stayed right with them. We competed hard, we just couldn't get over the hump. It's encouraging because we made some strides defensively and with our blocking. I know some of the areas we need to work on, we're going to get better. We've got to bounce back and be ready to go against a good Princeton team on Friday."
SET 1
The Matadors built a 14-10 lead following a kill from Tomsia and a Pepperdine hitting error. The hosts would get within two on three occasions before CSUN pushed the lead to four again (20-16) following a Rzepniewski kill. Three straight Pepperdine points trimmed the lead to one, forcing a Matador timeout, before a Waves service error and a Ptaszynski kill gave CSUN a 22-19 lead. A 4-0 run by Pepperdine erased the Matador lead and the hosts would close the set on a 6-1 run to take the set 25-23.
SET 2
After the Waves claimed four of the first five points, CSUN was forced to play from behind virtually the entire set. The Matadors pulled within one on several occasions but could wrestle the lead until Kalchev's kill snapped a 20-20 tie. CSUN led 22-21 and 23-22 before two straight points by the Waves set Pepperdine up with set point at 24-23. A triple block by Ptaszynski Tomsia and Wetterout of a timeout saved one set point and an ensuing ace by Tomsia set the Matadors up with set point at 25-24. A Pepperdine kill saved one set point before Tomsia and Kalchev put down kills on consecutive plays giving the Matadors the 27-25 win.
SET 3
CSUN trailed 9-4 early on and eventually went down 15-7 before before a 4-0 run cut the lead in half. Following a Pepperdine kill, the Matadors called timeout trailing 22-17 and CSUN would get no closer, falling 25-18.
SET 4
Behind Wieczorek's serving the Waves took an early 6-3 lead forcing a Matador timeout. Tomsia's kill pulled CSUN within 9-7 and the Matadors stayed within three at 14-11 when a kill from Kalchev followed by a Kalchev-Wetter co-block forced a Pepperdine timeout at 14-13. But the host Waves outscored CSUN 4-1 over the next five points to force a Matador timeout at 18-14. A 2-0 Matador run trimmed a 23-18 lead to 23-21 forcing a Pepperdine timeout. The Waves got a kill to cash in their second match point to win 25-22.
