Matadors Fall to No. 5 Pepperdine in Straight Sets
2/13/2019 9:44:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Junior Ksawery Tomsia team-highs of 12 kills and two aces but it wasn't enough as the fifth-ranked Pepperdine Waves handed the 11th-ranked Matadors a straight set loss in a non-conference match Wednesday night at The Matadome.
With the 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 win, Pepperdine improves to 9-2 on the season while the Matadors slip to 7-6.
KEY STATISTICS
• Tomsia, who also had five digs, and senior Dimitar Kalchev both reached double figures in kills as Kalchev added 10 kills on .308 hitting. Kalchev also had seven digs but was held without an ace for just the second time in 13 matches this season.
• Taylor Ittner had 33 assists and a pair of digs while Maciej Ptaszynski had a team-high eight digs along with eight kills.
• After hitting .526 in the opening set, the Matadors hit .161 over the final two sets to post a team clip of .247 (33-13-81).
• David Wieczorek led all hitters in the match with 13 kills (.417) for Pepperdine which hit .326 (42-11-95) in the win.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Pepperdine played very well tonight. We hit .526 in the first set and overall I thought we played good enough volleyball to beat some good teams but not the number five team in the country."
SET 1
Both teams were impressive on the offensive end as Pepperdine led 6-4 early on before extending the lead to 8-5 following a Wieczorek kill. A 3-2 Matador run trimmed the lead to 10-8 before the visitors claimed four of the next five points to open up a 14-9 lead. Following a CSUN timeout, the Waves scored on two of the next three to lead by as many as six, forcing another Matador timeout. CSUN pulled within four on three different occasions, the last at 20-16, before Pepperdine claimed five of the final nine points to take a 25-20 decision.
SET 2
Neither team hit particularly well in set two as the Waves did just enough to take a 25-23 win. After a Ptaszynski ace gave CSUN its largest lead at 8-5, Pepperdine answered with a 5-1 run to take a 10-9 lead. The Waves scored on two of the next three points out of a Matador timeout to lead by two and Pepperdine led by as many as three (17-14) before CSUN mounted a comeback. A Kalchev kill propelled the Matadors on a 3-1 run which cut the lead to 18-17 before three straight points by the visitors pushed the lead to 21-17. Undeterred, the Matadors rallied behind a 5-1 run to knot the score at 22 on a Philip Barker ace. The score was tied again at 23-23 following a Pepperdine hitting error before the Waves capped the set with a kill and a block.
SET 3
The Matadors held a pair of two-point leads in the early going before a 3-2 Pepperdine run erased a 13-12 CSUN lead, giving the Waves a 15-14 advantage. The Waves led by two at 17-15 when a kill and ace from Tomsia leveled the score at 17. But Tomsia served out on the next point before committing a hitting error which fueled a 6-2 run by the Waves which opened up a sizable 23-18 cushion. Three straight Matador points, the last coming on a Kalchev kill, cut the lead to 23-21 before Pepperdine closed the set by winning two of the final three points.
