No. 2 Hawai'i Stops No. 12 Matadors in Straight Sets
3/16/2019 12:10:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Senior Dimitar Kalchev tied for match-high honors with 12 kills but the 12th-ranked CSUN Matadors were swept by second-ranked Hawai'i in a Big West Conference match Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the 3-0 win (25-23, 25-16, 25-17), the Rainbow Warriors remain unbeaten this season at 16-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big West. The Matadors drop to 10-9 overall and are now 0-3 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Kalchev had seven kills in the opening set but had five more over the final two sets while hitting .250 on the night. Kalchev, who became CSUN's all-time leader in aces last week, was held without a service ace for just the fourth time this season.
• Ksawery Tomsia and Daniel Wetter each added seven kills as Wetter hit .636 on 11 errorless attacks. Tomsia rebounded from a stretch of rough hitting matches by hitting a solid .357 on 14 attacks. Tomsia and Wetter also served one ace as CSUN had just two aces in the loss.
• Taylor Ittner had 23 assists and four digs while senior libero Emmett Enriques posted a season-high seven assists to go with six digs.
• Hawai'i, the top hitting team in the country, hit .609 to CSUN's .276.
• Rado Parapunov matched Kalchev with 12 kills to lead the Rainbow Warriors, Parapunov hit .733 on 15 swings.
SET 1
The Matadors had a great chance to become the first team to take a set from Hawai'i this season but came up just short in the final stages. After the Rainbow Warriors closed to within 11-10, CSUN took advantage of a pair of Hawai'i errors to open up a 13-10 lead. The Matadors held four additional three-point leads, the last at 18-15, when the hosts outscored CSUN 6-1 over the next seven points to take a 21-19 lead. The Matadors were still within one at 22-21 when two straight Warrior points set Hawai'i up with set point at 24-21. A Kalchev kill and a Ptaszynski solo block saved a pair of set points before Kalchev's serve hit the tape giving Hawai'i the 25-23 win.
SET 2
The hosts hit ,650 to CSUN's .000 and won the set going away 25-16. A Hawai'i service error knotted the score at 8-8 before two kills and a block by the Rainbow Warriors quickly pushed the lead back to three (11-8). A kill by Wetter kill followed by a Wetter ace cut the lead to 11-10 when Hawai'i scored six unanswered points to open up a 17-10 cushion. Another 4-0 run by the hosts pushed the lead to 10 (21-11) and Hawai'i cruised to the 25-16 win.Â
SET 3
Tomsia's kill gave CSUN a 9-7 lead before a Patrick Gasman kill and a Joe Worsley ace quickly tied the score. Another Wetter kill kept the Matadors in front 11-10 when the hosts engineered a 6-0 run to open up a 16-11 lead. A Colton Cowell ace gave Hawai'i its largest lead of the set at 19-13 and CSUN would only get as close as six points the rest of the way as the Rainbow Warriors won in three sets for the 16th straight time in 2019.

The same two teams will have a rematch Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is scheduled for 10 p.m. PDT (7 p.m. local time).
