Meet CSUN's Under Armour Faculty

The CSUN Under Armour Faculty are a group of professors and lecturers committed to assisting student-athletes in their academic success and professional development. The group was started in 2016 by Professor and Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Ed Jackiewicz and has since grown to nearly 30 faculty members from various majors across campus.
Over the past few years, this group has assisted students through workshops, panel discussions, game attendance and one-on-one conversations. They are here to help you, the students. In the coming months, GoMatadors.com will introduce you to the various members of CSUN's UA Faculty.

Teaching and Research areas: Sex, gender, and sexuality
Growing up in Connecticut, basketball was always an important part of my life as a fan of the UConn women's team and as a player from childhood on. After graduating high school, I had to decide whether to pursue basketball at a small D-III college or to attend a large university and play on a club team. I ultimately chose a big 
school and attended Penn State University, where I majored in journalism. At the time, my ultimate goal was to move back home after graduation to work for ESPN.
After getting a taste of what being a woman in sports media would be like, I decided it wasn't for me and I applied to sociology graduate programs since I really liked those classes. I got into the sociology Ph.D. program at the University of Connecticut and discovered how much I loved teaching and research, especially on the topics of sex, gender, and sexuality. After graduation, I got a job at Quinnipiac University, where I worked for 5 years before coming to CSUN. At CSUN, I get to teach and mentor students in the areas I am passionate about, in particular, gender and sexuality.
I have continued to play basketball in women's leagues in Hollywood, Northridge, Burbank, and Chatsworth. I am not sure when it will be safe to play basketball again, but hopefully it won't be too long or it might be time for me to retire! If I am not playing basketball, I like to play tennis and watch anything and everything on Bravo.
