NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN head women's golf coach Gina Umeck has been honored as one of Golf Digest's Best Young Teachers.
Umeck, who was selected as a Western Section Coach of the Year by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in July of 2020, was among 33 golf coaches to be named to the list of teachers in the western portion of the United States.
"I'm humbled to be recognized by Golf Digest," she said. "I might be the only college coach who made the list, which really is an additional honor."
Umeck completed her seventh season at CSUN following the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season. This past season, the Matadors posted a pair of top-10 finishes, including a season-best seventh-place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational. Sophomore Kiran Sangha, who posted CSUN's low scoring average this season, finished a season-best sixth at Jackrabbit Invitational, the Matadors' final tournament of the season.
"I'd be very remiss if I didn't credit my mentors," Umeck added. "To me, the value in this award is the time I've spent with them. Michael Manavian, Dr. Robert Bush, and Andy Plummer have taken time to not just teach me, but to care about my education. I share this with them."
