From June 27 to August 8, GoMatadors.com will present its top-10 CSUN sports moments from the 2021-22 year. At No. 2, the CSUN Baseball team handed second-ranked Stanford a 9-3 defeat at Sunken Diamond on March 4.Â
Behind five RBI from Gabe Gonzalez and seven-plus quality innings on the mound from Blaine Traxel, CSUN Baseball knocked off No. 2 Stanford 9-3 in the opener of a three-game series on March 4.
Playing the future College World Series bound Cardinal, the Matadors jumped on the home team early by scoring in each of the first three innings. Kai Moody gave the Matadors a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly before CSUN manufactured a run in the second inning on a double steal that scored Drew Porter from third base. In the third, the Matadors pushed their lead to 5-0 when Gonzalez hammered a three-run homer.

Traxel scattered three hits through the first three innings, but Stanford battled back in the fourth inning with three-straight solo home runs to trim the deficit to 5-3. After the rough fourth inning, Traxel settled in and shut down the Cardinal over the next three innings. Stanford picked up a leadoff single in the sixth before Traxel retired the next seven batters in a row including picking up four strikeouts along the way.
Meanwhile, the Matadors collected insurance runs in the late innings in support of Traxel. Brandon Bohning tripled and scored on an error in the sixth before Gonzalez added to his RBI total with a two-run single in the seventh. Andrew Sojka extended the lead to 9-3 in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly.
CSUN's bullpen took over with one out in the eighth as the trio of Xavier Martinez, Gavin Lizik and Blake Schriever recorded the final five outs.
"I'm very proud of our guys," said head coach Dave Serrano after the game. "That's a good win against maybe one of the best teams in the country. I'm happy about the win and but maybe more satisfied with how we stayed in character and played Dors baseball."
CSUN would give Stanford a fight throughout the series, but the Cardinal prevailed over the next two days to clinch a series win, narrowly escaping with a one-run win in the finale.
