NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's junior outfielder Kevin Fitzer collected Big West Field Player of the Week honors on Monday, the league office announced. Fitzer hit a robust .529 at the plate and powered the Matadors to a 4-0 week and their first sweep in Big West play.
Originally from Aliso Viejo, Fitzer led CSUN's offense in nearly every statistical category last week including hits (9), RBI (7), runs scored (5), triples (2), on-base percentage (.619) and slugging percentage (1.000). He also was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts and produced four extra base hits.Â
Fitzer's offensive exploits began last Tuesday when he belted a three-run home run in an 8-4 win over Pepperdine. His blast came in the fourth inning and broke open a one-run CSUN lead.
In last weekend's series with UC Riverside, Fitzer was a constant threat at the plate all series. Fitzer was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish in the opener, finishing a home run shy of the cycle, while driving in two runs in an 8-4 victory. He registered two triples in the game, becoming the first Matador since Ridge Carpenter in 2011 to accomplish the feat.
Fitzer posted four more hits including a game-winning single in a wild 15-13 win in game two against UCR. Going 4-for-6 at the plate, Fizer's last hit would be the biggest of the night as it came with two outs in the top of the ninth, in a 3-2 count, and with the Matadors trailing by a run. Fitzer rifled a single through the left side to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs in the eventual CSUN victory to clinch the series. He capped the week by reaching base twice more and scoring a run to help CSUN secure a sweep of the Highlanders on Sunday.
On the season, Fitzer tops CSUN in batting average (.363), hits (29), doubles (7), triples (3), slugging percentage (.713) and on-base percentage (.474). He has also homered five times and driven in 21 runs to go with going 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts.
Fitzer's Big West Field Player of the Week award is the first of his career and the first weekly conference honor for a Matador this season.
CSUN travels to California Baptist Monday at 3 p.m. before returning home this weekend for a Big West series with UC Davis beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
