NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - For the ninth time in program history, CSUN men's volleyball had multiple student-athletes named All-American as senior Kyle Hobus and junior Donovan Constable were both named to the 2024 AVCA National Collegiate Men's All-America Teams on Monday.
Both Matadors are first-time All-Americans and become the first CSUN players to earn national recognition since Daniel Wetter was named for the second time following the 2022 season. Hobus and Constable are the program's 55th and 56th men's volleyball All-American dating back to 1985 when Chuck English earned the program's first All-America honor by Volleyball Magazine. Neil Coffman was the first CSUN player to earn AVCA All-America honors in 1991 and would be followed by 25 Matadors, most recently Wetter in both 2020 and 2022.
Hobus, a three-time first team All-Big West honoree, was named to the second team after leading CSUN with a career-high 406 kills during the 2024 season. He became just the 15th player in Matador men's volleyball history to reach 1,000 career kills with his seventh kill at UC San Diego on Mar. 14. He has also set new season career-highs in aces (46), blocks (83), and assists (28) this season. Hobus also earned first team All-Big West honors in 2022 and 2023 after being named honorable mention in 2020. That season, Hobus was also named Big West Co-Freshman of the Year as well an All-Freshman Team selection.
"I'm so proud and excited for Kyle Hobus! " said CSUN head coach Theo Edwards. "The time and dedication Kyle has put into his craft is truly inspiring. He has cemented himself in the record books, and will go down as one of the best pin hitters to have ever played at Northridge! It has been a pleasure to be a part of his journey."
Constable earned honorable mention accolades after picking up first team All-Big West honors for the first time in his career this season. A Big West All-Freshman Team selection in 2022, Constable has earned a pair of Big West Player of the Week honors this season while also earning All-Tournament Team accolades at the season-opening UCSB ASICS Invitational in January. This season, he has posted a career-high 1,077 assists while also surpassing his previous season-bests in nearly every statistical categories. He ranked second on the Matadors with 39 aces while also recording 65 total blocks, 139 digs, and 63 kills.
"This is such an amazing honor for Donovan, I am so incredibly proud of him!" said Edwards. "This season has been one of tremendous growth, and is just the tip of the iceberg of where his career will take him! Huge congratulations to Donovan Constable."
The Big West represents over a third of the AVCA's National Collegiate Men's Volleyball All-America Team as the list of 24 first- and second-team players includes representatives from 11 schools across the country, including four Big West member-institutions. League champion Long Beach State and GCU lead the way with three players apiece on the first team, and four total All-Americans. UC Irvine is right behind with three total players on the top two teams.
The Big West has claimed four of the last five national collegiate titles with Hawai'i hoisting the last two trophies in 2021 and '22 and Long Beach State earning the championship in both 2018 and '19. In both 2019 and '22, the championship finale featured both the Rainbow Warriors and the Beach in an All-Big West showdown for the title.
