LONG BEACH, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team fell to Long Beach State in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at LBSU Softball Complex. The first game was a 2-1 affair while CSUN lost in walk-off fashion in the second game, 3-2. Amber Rivas had two RBIs between both games and Mackenzie Kila had an RBI in game two. Alizae Cole pitched a complete game in game one. Senior Malia Williams pitched 6.1 innings in game two.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Vanessa Perez led off the game with a walk, and Raegan Jackson bunted her over to second. Maddie Okano hit a deep fly ball that was caught in center field, and Perez moved to third base in the process. Rivas promptly hit a single to left field and scored Perez as CSUN struck first for a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the first, Long Beach tied things up with one swing. Avery Weisbrook swung and hit a ball over the left field wall to even the score at 1-1.
Â
In the next inning, LBSU took the lead. After an infield single, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Lina Apodaca singled up the middle to make it a 2-1 affair after two innings.Â
Â
It was a pitcher's duel the rest of the way with no runs scored in the final five innings. Cole, the freshman, pitched a complete game in her first career start, only allowing four hits. She kept the Matadors in the game, but the CSUN offense came up short.Â
Â
GAME TWO
Perez walked and Jackson got hit by a pitch to start the game. After they were bunted over, an RBI groundout by Rivas brought the first run of the game home for a 1-0 CSUN lead after the first half inning.
Â
In the bottom of the third, Long Beach State took the lead. A single and a double opened the inning for the Beach. A wild pitch and a throwing error scored both of the runs as Long Beach took the lead, 2-1.
Â
Flash forward to the top of the sixth and CSUN struck back. Jackson got hit by a pitch and Rivas singled to right field before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kila evened the scoring at two apiece.
Â
It came down to the bottom of the seventh where Long Beach had the potential for a walk-off victory. Three straight singles loaded up the bases for Brooklyn Lee. She promptly singled into center field and won the game for the Beach.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We're really going to miss our seniors. CSUN is a better place because those girls choose to be here. They made a huge impact on our program. This team doesn't stop fighting. They don't give up and they fight until the very last out. They have integrity and it just shows the character of who they are not only as players, but as people too."
