California State University Northridge Athletics

Welcome to the new Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) blog!
CSUN SAAC is made up of representatives of each Division I sport, and it meets regularly to plan community events, discuss topics affecting student-athletes, provide input to athletics and campus administrators and discuss ways to support other student-athletes and classmates on and off campus.
Throughout the year, different SAAC members will post here to keep Matador fans updated about what CSUN student-athletes are up to outside the field of play. This blog will include recaps of community service and other events that CSUN student-athletes are involved in. We at SAAC want to make sure Matador nation knows about all of the great things student-athletes are doing to support each other, the CSUN community and the San Fernando Valley.

On Monday November 16, 2015, the CSUN softball team went to the YMCA in Porter Ranch to help give Thanksgiving dinners to families in need. We helped with tasks such as moving and
Our team helped collect tickets and hand out the bags filled with items such as boxed stuffing, boxed mashed potatoes and produce, and each family also received a turkey. At the YMCA in Porter Ranch, we worked alongside Councilman Mitchell Englander. It was a great experience to meet him and he was extremely thankful for our support and help with our community.
Volunteering a few hours out of our busy day really brought out the warm and fuzzy feelings inside. Helping out the families and being able to interact with them was so rewarding. Giving back to the community, even for just a day, is something that is so small of a gesture, but it clarifies the bigger picture of spreading the holiday spirit to everyone in the community.
We could see that giving these families the opportunity to have a real Thanksgiving dinner brightened up their whole day! Through volunteering our time, we saw many families, and being able to witness such joy brought us all back to realize that we are extremely fortunate to have the every day items that we sometimes take for granted. We look forward to helping out with these events and many more in our community in the future, and to bringing the Matador spirit everywhere we go!

On Wednesday, November 11 and Thursday, November 12, the CSUN women’s soccer team volunteered at the Good Shepherd Women’s Shelter located in Los Angeles. The shelter hosted an event for the mothers and children of the shelter by setting up a room for them to choose 25 items of their choice, including clothing, shoes, purses, toys, and books.
Our team assisted by babysitting the children so that their mothers could go and choose their clothes without having to worry. In addition to babysitting, we also helped out by assisting the women who need help searching for a size or type of clothing or carrying their bags for them.
Prior to last week, CSUN women’s soccer volunteered in the spring to make and serve breakfast to a group of women, and also bought supplies and built shelves for the shelter to organize their donations.
The feeling is unreal when you know that you’re able to help someone out with something as little as watching children for a couple of hours. Even though we are ultimately serving them, they teach us to be appreciative for everything we have. The women are extremely grateful for our help and our team hopes to continue to build a great relationship with this organization and carry it on into future.
