The Cape Crew Student Interns Will Give Fans a Real-Time Look at CSUN Athletics from @CSUNCapeCrew
Northridge, CA (May 6, 2015) - CSUN Athletics announced today the creation of the The Cape Crew, a new social media internship program for CSUN students beginning in the fall of 2015. The Cape Crew will develop and implement social media campaigns for CSUN's 19 varsity sports while also providing fans with contests and live game day and special event coverage, giving fans a real-time look at the world of CSUN Athletics. Social media content from The Cape Crew will be available on Twitter and Instagram @CSUNCapeCrew starting in the fall.
"As we grow the CSUN Sports Network, we are excited to be able to expand our social media coverage and content for our athletic programs. Social media strategies are critical for intercollegiate athletics departments in order to increase fan engagement," said CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin. "This gives us another opportunity to connect with our fans and share our story with the CSUN community."
The Cape Crew will serve as an outlet for CSUN fans looking for in-game information, such as scoring and statistical updates, as well as exclusive online content, including photos, highlight clips and live postgame interviews. In addition to delivering updates from CSUN's various athletic venues members of The Cape Crew will work from The Red Cape, a social media command center located next to The Matadome, to interact with fans in real time and participate in the online discussion.
Additional social content will include exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at CSUN practices and other events, such as the RISE Awards, Matador Madness and more. The Cape Crew will also host fan-driven Twitter chats on @CSUNCapeCrew with student-athletes, coaches and administrators, as well as contests and giveaways through MatadorsConnect.
CSUN Athletics will partner with CSUN's Departments of Journalism and Marketing to build The Cape Crew and recruit top students for the program. The collaborative effort includes students in CSUN's public relations practicum, Agency 398, as well as interns from both departments. The Cape Crew student interns will gain valuable experience in branding, engagement and online marketing in addition to live event coverage using social media.
"The Cape Crew provides real-world opportunities for students to put the skills they've developed at CSUN into action," added Dr. Martin. "This program benefits the students, the Athletics Department and the University at large. This is another key component to our Comprehensive Excellence agenda."
"We are constantly looking for new ways to engage both our student population and CSUN fans as a whole," said Assistant Athletic Director for Digital Marketing Kevin Strauss. "Our partnership with the journalism and marketing departments on campus will allow us to provide extensive coverage our fans crave, created by those most connected to CSUN and the Matadors."
