Robert J. Hiegert Field, located on Lindley Avenue between Halsted and Lassen Streets, is the site for all CSUN baseball home games. With a current capacity of more than 1,000 fans, and dimensions of 325 feet down the left and right field lines, 360 feet to the power alleys, and 390 feet to straightaway center field, Hiegert Field has been a staple of the campus since the first game played in 1961.
Named Matador Field since its inception, the facility was renamed Robert J. Hiegert Field in honor of the former CSUN skipper who remains the all-time winningest coach in program history.
In 2025, CSUN played night games for the first time in the 67-year history of CSUN Baseball. The brand-new lighting system was part of an ongoing renovation and expansion of the Matadors' home baseball field. The inaugural night game was held Feb. 20, 2025 when CSUN hosted BYU. The Matadors' Tyler Mejia belted the Matadors' first home run under the lights, a solo blast in the fourth inning, which would be accompanied by a light show to celebrate the moment.
Along with the new lights, CSUN installed a new Daktronics state-of-the-art videoboard in 2024, while enhancements have been made to the playing-field surface to make the Robert J. Hiegert Field among the best on the West Coast. CSUN is continuing to raise funds to complete many other upgrades to the home ballpark that has stood for six-plus decades.
The CSUN infield surface features Bermuda natural grass, with a dirt warning track encircling the outfield. The dirt portion of the infield is a Dodger Mix that is a mixture of crushed brick and clay.
The Matadors played their first game at Matador Field on March 4, 1961, a setback to Claremont-Mudd, and claimed their first victory there on March 25, a 9-3 triumph in the second game of a doubleheader against Long Beach State.
Thirty-one years later, the Matadors celebrated their 500th win at Matador Field, defeating Southern Utah, 30-1, on April 18, 1992. Almost five years later to the day on April 22, 1997, CSUN outslugged Southern California, 18-17, to achieve win No. 600, with victory No. 700 at Matador Field taking place five years later on May 14, 2002 in a 9-6 triumph over Loyola Marymount. On April 11, 2010, the Matadors captured their 800th win over a 3-2 verdict over CSU Bakersfield.
Since its introduction in 1961, Hiegert Field has undergone many improvements. Most recently, the First Base Club VIP area and new graphics were added in 2015. In 2008, a brand new panoramic backstop was installed, following the addition of new bleachers and an enclosed, two-room press box in 2005. The dugouts and Matador clubhouse were redesigned in fall of 2002 and a new scoreboard was added in 1996.
Among many other renovations over the years, Matador Field boasted the first covered batting cage on any college campus on the West Coast at the time due to additions in 1975.
Internet lines for working media and visiting staff members are available in addition to wireless Internet access at the press box during all games.
Parking passes can be purchased for $8 at any booth or self-serve kiosk. Spectators can park along Lindley Avenue next to the field or in Lot E6.
