Football Coach Sam Winningham Spirit Plaza
CSUN Athletics is establishing a platform to honor the legacy of the San Fernando Valley State College/CSUN football program. We plan to rename the Matador Spirit Plaza near The Matadome and Matador Pool to memorialize the football program by years, highlighting coaches and players.
We are proposing to rename the area the "Football Coach Sam Winningham Spirit Plaza" to honor Coach Winningham as the first head coach of Matador Football. Visual displays would be featured depicting each era of Matador Football highlighting each coach and team, and emphasis will be placed on All-Conference and All-American honorees, record holders, academic excellence and other outstanding accomplishments.
Generous support from alumni and friends is necessary to make this dream a reality. It is important that we celebrate the football program as part of our athletics program and that football is remembered for its place in the SFVSC/CSUN legacy.
