The Matador Beach Volleyball Complex is the newest athletic facility on the CSUN campus, opening in 2015. The first-ever match at the venue saw the Matadors host No. 7 UCLA on Mar. 5, 2015. CSUN's first victory on its home sand came four days later when the Matadors defeated TCU, 4-1, on Mar. 9.
In 2018, the creation of the G6 Parking Structure led to the relocation of the Matador Beach Volleyball Complex from the east side of campus to the center of campus, adjacent to Matador Hall. The new facility was expanded from the size of the former facility to accommodate CSUN's recreational purposes and other events. The former beach facility had three competition courts; the current facility will also have the same three competition courts, but will have additional space for a potential layout of up to five recreational courts.
In addition, the new complex will be in a favorable location regarding wind conditions, which are ever-present in the San Fernando Valley during the Spring months.
“It changes the direction of the prevailing wind conditions, which is far more similar to traditional beach volleyball conditions,” said Jeff Stork, CSUN’s Director of Women’s Volleyball at the time of construction. “The expansion will also provide extra space between courts, which will be beneficial to our fans and enable us to host other events.”
The location of the new facility is also nearer to the center of the campus and will be the closest athletic facility to Matador Hall, which houses much of the CSUN coaching staff. It will also raise the visibility of beach volleyball on campus due to the fact that hundreds of CSUN students will walk or ride from the dorms to class directly past the new complex on a daily basis.
Sustainability was also important in the construction of the new facility. The expanded facility will contain a large portion of the sand from the previous facility, along with a mix of new sand, which provides a state-of-the-art playing surface. The competition nets and fencing surrounding the facility were also transported from the old facility across campus to the new location.
