1984 Baseball Team
- Induction:
- 2018
- Class:
- 1984

The 1984 CSUN Baseball team was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Led by CSUN Hall of Fame coach Bob Hiegert, the Matadors won their second NCAA Division II National Championship in program history in 1984.Â
CSUN's '84 team set a then-program record in wins, finishing with a 46-21-1 mark while the team registered 29 team and individual records.Â
The 1984 season proved to be the last for Bob Hiegert, and he would go out in style, coaching CSUN back to the National Championship. The Matadors possessed one of the deepest teams under Hiegert, led by All-American outfielder Mike Solomon along with All-Conference selections in outfielders Bryant Long and Mark Ban, second baseman Perry Husband, catcher Mike Ellison, and pitchers Jim Walker and Steve Sharts.Â
CSUN would take down CCAA champion Chapman College in the Western Regional, three games to one. In the College World Series, CSUN won its first game 17-2 but dropped a tough 7-6 decision to Florida Southern. Fighting out of the losing bracket, CSUN dispatched of New Haven and Troy State before blanking Florida Southern 10-0 to set up a championship showdown with the Mocs.Â
Walker would pitch for the third time in five days and give the Matador offense a chance to break open a late 6-5 lead in a 10-5 win over Florida Southern. Husband would be named MVP, famously going 8-for-11 in a doubleheader at the College World Series.
Hiegert concluded his legendary collegiate career by winning the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year award.Â
