Doug Jones was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. Jones lettered as a defensive back for the San Fernando Valley State (CSUN) Football team in 1971 and 1972 while he spent two seasons on the CSUN track & field team under Hall of Famer Cliff Abel from 1972 to 1973. 
Jones, who played his first two seasons for the Arizona State Sun Devils, is recognized as one of the most successful football alumni in the university's history. He earned All-CCAA honors in both seasons at San Fernando Valley State in 1971 and 1972. Jones set two CSUN season records during his playing career, and still ranks among the all-time program leaders in kick return yardage (736) and average return yards (21.6).
On the track and field team, Jones earned All-American honors in the high hurdles in 1972 and 1973. He also set a school record in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.07, which stood as CSUN's top mark until 1997.Â

Following his standout college performance in football, Jones was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 6th round (145th overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft. He played six seasons in the NFL, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs (1973–1974), Buffalo Bills (1976–1978), and Detroit Lions (1979). He recorded six interceptions, one touchdown, and three fumble recoveries across 68 career games.
