Dr. Sam Winningham

Dr. Sam Winningham was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.
The first head coach of Matador Football, Winningham coached the San Fernando Valley State College (CSUN) Football program from 1962-68. Winningham's tenure was highlighted by the Matadors' trip to the 1967 Junior Rose Bowl against West Texas State.
After retiring from coaching, he earned his Ph.D. in physical education from the University of Southern California (USC). He returned to CSUN to serve in an Assistant Athletic Director role and was Chairman of the Physical Education and Athletic Department from 1978 to 1988.
In November 2017, CSUN honored his deep generational impact by naming the Matador Spirit Plaza after him. The Winningham Spirit Plaza is prominent outdoor gathering space located near the Premier America Credit Union Arena (formerly The Matadome) and the Matador Pool
Winningham passed away in April 2024 at the age of 98.
