- Induction:
- 1985
- Class:
- 1980
Pam Spencer-Marquez was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985. Spencer-Marquez is one of the most decorated high jumpers in CSUN Track & Field history, excelling as both an elite athlete and a coach.
Spencer-Marquez, a three-time U.S. Olympic team member, still holds the school record for the women's high jump. She helped lead the CSUN women's team to an Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championship in 1979 under legendary coach Dr. Barbara Swerkes.
She qualified for three consecutive U.S. Olympic teams in 1976 (Montreal), 1980 (Moscow), and 1984 (Los Angeles). She was one of the youngest members of the 1976 squad at just 18 years old. Due to the 1980 U.S. boycott, she missed competing in Moscow but later received a Congressional Gold Medal. Spencer-Marquez broke and raised the women's American high jump record twice in 1981, achieving her personal best of 6-5.50 (1.97 meters).
Spencer-Marquez secured three U.S. National Championships (1976 indoor, 1981, and 1984 outdoor) and won a silver medal at the 1979 Pan American Games.
She returned to her alma mater in 1993, when she was hired as an assistant track coach to train the men's and women's high jumpers. Her expertise led to her selection as an assistant coach for the USA Track & Field women’s team at the 2015 Pan American Games. Spencer-Marquez has also dedicated decades to coaching youth and high school athletes at Southern California schools, including Alemany High, Mission Hills, and Heritage Christian High School.
