Phillip Munroe

Phillip "Phil" Munroe was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986. A Professor Emeritus of Physical Education, Munroe started at CSUN when the University opened as San Fernando Valley State College in 1958.

He was hired to be the assistant athletic director, the baseball coach, and a physical education instructor during the athletic department's formative years. He established the CSUN Baseball program and served as head coach of the team from 1959 to 1961. Munroe left his active baseball coaching duties in 1962 as the University began to grow and his responsibilities as assistant athletic director increased.Â

He was hired to be the assistant athletic director, the baseball coach, and a physical education instructor during the athletic department's formative years. He established the CSUN Baseball program and served as head coach of the team from 1959 to 1961. Munroe left his active baseball coaching duties in 1962 as the University began to grow and his responsibilities as assistant athletic director increased.Â
As the Assistant Athletics Director, Munroe helped to oversee the development of the University from a small suburban college to a major NCAA Division II power in a variety of sports. He occupied the assistant athletic director position until 1973. He would return to coaching in 1973, serving as head coach of the Matador Men's Tennis team from 1973 to 1980.
Outside of coaching, he joined the faculty in 1958Â and spent decades teaching within the Department of Physical Education.
Prior to his tenure at CSUN, Munroe completed his education at Washington State College (now Washington State University), earning a bachelor of science in 1948, a bachelor of education in 1949, and a master of science in 1955.
