Steve Messmer

Steve Messmer was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. Messmer, who lettered for the CSUN Men's Tennis team, captured both the NCAA College Division Singles Championship and Doubles Championship (partnering with George Benedict) in 1969.
Messmer's dominant performance led the Matadors (then known as San Fernando Valley State) to the 1969 NCAA Team Championship. He was also named CSUN's Most Valuable Player in 1969.
He went on to compete on the international circuit, qualifying for the men's singles main draw at Wimbledon in 1973 (where he was also the runner-up in the All England Plate) and the US Open in 1974. Messmer achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 282 in September 1974.
Following his playing career, Messmer toured and taught tennis until 1988 before transitioning into a career as a medical sales representative. Messmer, who graduated from San Fernando Valley State (CSUN) in 1969, passed away in 2017 at the age of 68.
