DAVIS, Calif. – Cal State Northridge (29-21, 9-12 BWC) defeated UC Davis, 5-2 Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field. Amanda Pitzenberger pitched a complete game and Alexandria Alvarado had two RBIs for CSUN in the victory.
In the win, Pitzenberger scattered eight hits and struck out one and now stands at 4-2 on the season. The effort was her third complete game of the season. Alvarado finished the regular season with a career-high 18 RBIs.
The Matadors got off the blocks quickly. Micah Putnam drew a walk to start the game and promptly stole second. Lauren Olivas then moved her to third with a sac bunt and Alexandria Alvarado smacked a single up the middle to make it 1-0.
Then with two outs in the frame, Jaclyn Rymer laced a single up the middle to bring Tracy Allen home and give CSUN a 2-0 lead after half an inning. CSUN loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second. Lauren Olivas smacked a hard groundball to the shortstop, who bobbled the ball, allowing each runner to move up a base and give the Matadors a 3-0 lead. Alvarado then singled to the shortstop in the next at-bat, extending the CSUN lead to 4-0.
After UC Davis scored in the bottom of the second, the Matadors got the run back in the top of the third when Sarah Kahn-Shamout singled up the middle to bring home Rymer.
The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the fourth after a two-out error by Karla Chaparro. However, she redeemed herself on the next batter, snagging a hard liner to end the inning and leave UCD runners at second and third.
UC Davis threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. After Pitzenberger got an out, UCD loaded the bases, but the final out was recorded on a fly ball to right field. The Matadors' 29 wins are the most by a CSUN softball team since 2004 and the third-most this decade.
