Northridge Falls 71-62 to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-11) lost 71-62 to South Dakota Saturday evening at the Dakota Dome. Haley White, Analee Viena-Lota and Janelle Nomura all had 12 points for Northridge.

Northridge got within five points, 54-49, with nine minutes left in the game thanks in part to its full-court defense. However, that would be as close as the Matadors would get as South Dakota pulled away in the waning moments of the contest.

The Coyotes held a sizable advantage in the paint, outscoring the Matadors 38-12. South Dakota also finished with 22 second-chance points compared to 10 for CSUN. Finally, South Dakota finished with a 50-36 advantage in rebounding

In all, four Matadors finished in double figures. Viena-Lota was 6-of-12 from the field and added a team-high six rebounds. Nomura made 7-of-8 from the free throw line and had four assists. Violet Alama added 10 points and four rebounds.

White had a breakout first half for CSUN and finished with a season-high 12 points. She was a season-high 3-of-6 from the field and also set new season best with two 3-pointers. Finally, White added five rebounds and team-high five assists for Northridge.

For the game, CSUN shot 21-of-58 from the field (36.2 percent) and 5-of-16 from 3-point range (31.3 percent). The Matadors knocked down 15-of-16 free throws (93 percent), their highest team percentage from the charity stripe this season.

Amber Hegge led the Coyotes with 26 points. Jodie Boss added 16 points and 13 rebounds for South Dakota. CSUN trailed 34-25 at halftime. White led the Matadors with 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and had four assists and three rebounds. Alama had six points and rebounds for Northridge.
The Matadors remain on the road for their next game, a Dec. 20 tilt with No. 20 Iowa State. Tip-off from Hilton Coliseum is slated for 7 p.m. (CT) / 5 p.m. (PT). Following the contest with the Cyclones, CSUN opens its Big West season with a Dec. 31 game at Pacific.
