The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (3-7-2, 1-1-1 Big West) lost 2-0 to Cal Poly Friday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. The Mustangs' Cici Kobinski broke the deadlock in the 67th minute as the Matadors dropped their first league home match since the 2009 season.
Cal Poly controlled the tempo and possession of the match from the opening kickoff. The Matadors had trouble dealing with the Mustangs' defensive pressure and turned the ball over frequently in midfield.
Although both teams would exchange chances through the first hour, it was Cal Poly that finally broke through in the second half. Kobinski collected a pass from McKenzie Orand and slotted it to the left corner for her second goal of the season.
The Matadors searched for an eqaulizer for the final 23 minutes of the match but could not solve the Mustangs' defense. Sara Lancaster added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds after Cynthia Jacobo left her line in an attempt to get involved on a CSUN free kick.
Jacobo finished with three saves and Northridge was also credited with a team save.
Melissa Fernandez had four shots to lead the Matadors, putting three on goal. Heidi Farran and Brielle Slepicoff also had good looks at goal but Brooke Gauvin finished with seven saves to earn the shutout.
Northridge will look to get back on schedule with a home match against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kick off between the Matadors and Gauchos is slated for 5 p.m.
