Papi Diouf Ties Match with Less than Three Minutes in Regulation
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (8-8-3) lost 2-1 in overtime to UC Davis Saturday night in a Big West Conference Tournament match at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Papi Diouf tied the match for CSUN with less than three minutes left in regulation, but a costly turnover set up the Aggies to win in the extra period.Â
CSUN fought until the bitter end Saturday night, extending their season into overtime in the closing minutes of the second half. A hectic sequence in goal left an Aggie injured in the goal mouth. On the ensuing restart, senior David Turcios launched a ball into the penalty area that fellow senior Tanner Snedigar was able to cross in front of goal. Diouf jumped on the ball and headed home his second goal of the year.Â
For Turcios, the assist was his second of the season and he ended his Matador career with an even 20 helpers. The helper was Snedigar's first of the season.Â
UC Davis broke the scoreless tie in the 74th minute. Connor Willis-Hong, fresh off the bench as a substitute, beat CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs to the near post after a pass from Matt Wiesenfarth. The goal was Willis-Hong's first of the year.Â
In overtime, Wisenfarth jumped on a miscue by the CSUN defense and ended the match with his fourth goal of the season.Â
In his final game in net for the Matadors, Hobbs finished with three saves. The CSUN defense was credited with a team save in the first half when Jumoke Hutton stopped a shot from Kristian Heptner.Â
UC Davis held a narrow 13-12 advantage in shots and Kris Schutlz made four saves to earn the victory in goal. CSUN finished with a season-high nine corner kicks and the teams combined for just 17 fouls. Andrew Rizeq and both team benches saw the yellow card during the match.Â
The loss ends CSUN's season and marks the end for a talented senior class. Trevor Morley was named 2015 Big West Defensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Big West honors for the third-straight year. In just three seasons, Hobbs, who earned Second Team All-Big West honors, finished with 29 career victories, the third-most in program history. He also posted 216 saves and 14 shutouts in his CSUN career, both good for fourth in program history.
Turcios, who earned First Team All-Big West honors, finished the year with a career-high four goals and added two assists. Carlos Gonzalez earned Second Team All-Big West honors after scoring a career-high five goals this season, including three game winners. Victor Vasquez, Benjamin Asor and Snedigar also had standout careers for CSUN in their time with the program.Â
