Tessa Boagni Scores Career-High 28 for CSUN
PORTLAND, Ore. ---Â The CSUN women's basketball team (2-9) lost 83-77 to Portland State Sunday afternoon at the Stott Center in a non-conference contest. Sophomore Tessa Boagni scored a career-high 28 points, but the Vikings found success from the 3-point line in the second half to secure the victory.
Boagni had a solid day for the Matadors, finishing 11-of-20 from the field. She added eight rebounds and two blocks in 36 minutes of action. She is averaging 13.1 points per game for the season and the performance was her second game over 20 points this season.
CSUN led 60-55 moments into the fourth period, but the Vikings found their range from behind the 3-point line. Portland State was 9-of-12 from deep in the second half and 12-of-27 for the game.
The contest seemed to swing in the Vikings' favor when Kian McNair connected on a 3-point heave from half court as the third period ended. Portland State then made its first four 3-point attempts of the fourth period to sustain the momentum.
CSUN trailed 71-70 after a pair of free throws from Boagni with 4:11 left in the contest. However, Portland State closed the game on a 12-7 run to seal the victory. CSUN made just two of its last nine field goal attempts while Portland State hit eight of its final 10 shots.
The Matadors led 17-13 after the first period. Boagni, Serafina Maulupe and Cheyenne Allen each had four points in the opening 10 minutes for CSUN.
In the second period, the Vikings fought back and led 36-35 at halftime. CSUN shot 38.2 percent from the field in the opening frame compared to 35.1 percent for Portland State.
Maulupe finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. She added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the defeat.
Allen finished with a career-high 12 points and added four assists, a steal and a rebound in 28 minutes of work. Caroline Gilling came off the bench to finish with two points and six rebounds and Nautica Morrow also added six rebounds.
The Matadors shot 41.4 percent for the game, but just 25 percent from 3-point range. The Vikings out-rebounded the Matadors 43-36 and had held a 16-8 advantage in points from the bench.
Michaela Kay led Portland State with 21 points while McNair scored 18 and Cici West finished with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
CSUN returns to action on Dec. 28 with a road contest at Arizona State. Tip off between the Matadors and Sun Devils is set for 3 p.m. MT // 2 p.m. PT.Â
