Caroline Gilling Scores Career-High 11 Points
TEMPE, Ariz. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-10) lost 69-46 to No. 21 Arizona State Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wells Fargo Arena. Serafina Maulupe scored a team-high 17 points and Caroline Gilling added a career-high 11, but the second and third periods lifted the Sun Devils past the Matadors.
CSUN got off to a great start Monday in its first game after the Christmas holiday. The Matadors led by as many as eight and Maulupe scored 10 points in the opening frame. Leading 19-12, fouls hampered the Matadors' ability to keep the lead as the Sun Devils scored seven-straight points from the free throw line to tie the game at 19-19 after 10 minutes of action.
The second and third periods were a struggle for CSUN. The Matadors totaled eight points in the second period and Gilling scored all five of CSUN's points in the third period. Conversely, the Sun Devils totaled 24 and 17 points, respectively, in the two periods and led 60-32 after 30 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, CSUN fought back and eventually out-scored the Sun Devils 14-9 for the 10 minutes.
Maulupe finished an efficient 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range in 26 minutes of action. She added three rebounds and three assists and has now scored in double-figures in eight-straight games.
Gilling set a new career high with the 11 points and matched a career best with three 3-pointers, three assists and two blocked shots. She also had four rebounds and a steal in a career-high 35 minutes. The performance was the first double-digit scoring effort of her career.
Boagni finished with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. She and Lindsay Neuner tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
The Matadors were hurt by 25 turnovers which resulted in 33 points for ASU. The Sun Devils also held a commanding 40-16 advantage in points in the paint for the contest and out-rebounded the Matadors 42-29.
Arnecia Hawkins was the only ASU player to reach double-figures, scoring a game-high 18 points in the win.
As a team, CSUN shot 42.2 percent (19-of-45) from the field and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from 3-point range. ASU finished at 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field and 50 percent (3-of-6) from 3-point range.
CSUN will get another crack at a nationally ranked Pac-12 opponent in its next game, a match-up with No. 18 California on Dec. 30. Tip-off from Haas Pavilion is slated for 7 p.m. The Matadors then return home for a Jan. 2 non-conference contest against Seattle University at 4 p.m. The game will be followed by a CSUN-Morgan State men's basketball game and separate tickets are required for each contest.Â
