CSUN Falls 7-2 in Series Finale to Cal State Fullerton

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-
CSUN Baseball (20-8, 1-2 Big West) could not overcome falling into an early hole, as the Matadors dropped the series finale to Cal State Fullerton (14-13, 2-1 Big West) by the final of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Justin Toerner knocked in three hits for CSUN including an RBI double.
"What we didn't do today was stay in positive counts and they took advantage of that," said Head Coach Greg Moore. "We never really got anything going consistently offensively."
In what turned out to be a bad omen for the Matadors, Fullerton picked up two early runs in its half of the first inning and seized control of the game from the outset. A Tyler Stieb RBI double put Fullerton on the board first and a throwing error by Matador starter Rayne Raven gave the Titans a 2-0 edge.
After giving up the two quick runs, Raven settled down over the next three frames to keep CSUN only down by two.
In the fifth, however, Fullerton would finally get to Raven. David Olmedo-Barrera homered off the right-hander to push his team ahead 3-0.
An inning later, the Titans added three more to further take control of the game.
Behind 6-0, the Matadors scratched the run column when Justin Toerner ripped a double to left center field. The extra-base hit brought home Chester Pak from first base, cutting the lead to 6-1.
The Matadors entered the ninth trailing 7-1 and inched a little closer on a two-out RBI single off the bat of William Colantono. CSUN would not get any closer in the inning, however, as Toerner flied out to end the game.
Not only was the series a battle between the Big West Conference teams, the weekend series set the stage for the first-ever meetings between Dalton Blaser of Cal State Fullerton and his brother Nick Blaser of CSUN.
On Sunday, each Blaser picked up two hits apiece. On the series Nick went 5-for-10 with an RBI and Dalton countered with a 3-for-7 series and two doubles.
CSUN Baseball resumes Big West competition on Thursday for the start of a three-game series at Long Beach State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
