Game One Recap
The Matadors posted their 13th-straight win to start the conference season with a 6-2 victory in the first game Saturday. Brianna Elder (16-4) picked up her 16th win of the season after allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Elder went seven strong innings, working around eight hits and two walks. Long Beach State scored its second run on the final play of the game.Â
Offensively, Taylor Glover, Katie Hooper and Horvath all had two hits and two RBIs in the victory. Glover tied a season high with three runs scored and stole her 27th base of the season. Hooper now has 53 RBIs on the season, one shy of tying a program record for a single season. Horvath recorded her team-leading 13th double of the season in the win.Â
In the first, Glover drew a one-out walk and scored on Horvath's double. The Matadors added four more in the second on a two-run single from Glover and a two-run double from Hooper, her 10th of the season.Â
After LBSU scored an unearned run in the third, CSUN got it right back with a run in the fourth when Horvath singled to score Glover.Â
The game featured two stoppages for rain.Â
Game Two Recap
The Matadors could not hold on to a late one-run lead and lost their first league game of the season after the 49ers rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth, Horvath blasted her ninth home run of the season to give CSUN the 4-3 advantage.Â
However, the 49ers started the seventh with a solo home run and a single off Elder (16-4). A fielding error on the next play put runners on second and third with no outs and the game ended on an RBI single.Â
Elder allowed four hits with one walk in 2.1 innings of relief work. Daphne Pofek went 1.2 innings with three hits and a strikeout. Jordan Sauceda started the game for the Matadors, working around three walks and two hits in 2.0 scoreless innings.Â
CSUN jumped ahead 3-0 in the fourth inning. Ariana Wassmer picked up an RBI single and Maylynn Mitchell added a two-run double. Unfortunately, the 49ers tied the game in their half of the fourth on a bases-clearing double.Â
The Matadors and 49ers will play the third and decisive game in the series Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.Â
