Manios, Steffes Score Second Half Goals

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- A pair of second-half goals gave the CSUN men's soccer team (1-0) a 2-1 comeback victory over visiting Loyola-Chicago Sunday evening in the Matadors' 2015 season opener. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Steven Manios tied the match in the 55th minute and Dean Wright punched home the winning goal in the 73rd minute to give the Matadors their fourth win in their home opener over the last five seasons.
"We showed that we can take a punch and get back up," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "We took some punches against LMU, Cal Poly Pomona and tonight in Loyola-Chicago, but we got back up and showed a lot of resiliency and character."
After Loyola-Chicago went ahead in the eighth minute on a goal from Sam Vinson, CSUN searched for an equalizer for the rest of the second half. The Matadors almost got back on level footing on a shot from Papi Diouf in the 23rd minute, but the ball clanged off the post and back into play.
In the second half, the momentum began to change as CSUN continued pressuring for the equalizer. That pressure finally cracked the Ramblers' defense in the 55th minute. With the Matadors deep in the area, a clearance back to midfield landed at the feet of CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs. He served the ball back into the scrum near the 18-yard box where Trevor Morley chested it down and Manios beat the goalkeeper to his left.
The goal was the first of Manios' career while Morley and Hobbs each picked up an assist on the play.
CSUN would strike the woodwork once again in the 70th minute off the foot of Steffes. That play was a preview for the game-winning goal as Wright would punch the ball into the netting after a hectic play in the penalty area.
Streaking down the right side of attack, Manios delivered a ball that Wright got a head to and forced the Ramblers' goalkeeper off his line. With players crashing in for the loose ball, Steffes managed to poke it towards the net and Wright tapped it past a charging defender on the goal line.
The goal was the first of Wright's CSUN career while Steffes and Manios picked up assists on the play.
"We are starting to get a little less apprehensive as we go forward in attack. We have a lot of new, young players who just need time and minutes," Davila added. "I am very happy for Dean Wright. He missed the past two years with injury, so for him to come back and make an immediate impact is great and makes us all proud."
Hobbs was called upon late to preserve the victory, making a diving save to his left in the 86th minute. The senior posted three total saves in the match to earn the victory, his 22nd in a CSUN uniform. That total is the fifth-most in program history.
The teams combined for 21 shots and 25 fouls. Three Ramblers saw the yellow card while Chester Castellaw and Patrick Hickman were cautioned for CSUN.
The Matadors hit the road for their next two contests, traveling to Nebraska to meet nationally ranked Creighton (Sept 4) and Omaha (Sept 6). CSUN's next home game will be on Friday, Sept. 11 against New Mexico at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
Editor's Note: After a lengthy review of the video replay, the goal was changed from Steffes to Wright for the game-winning goal.
