Steven Manios Collects 2nd Goal of 2015
OMAHA, Neb. --- A goal in the 89th minute lifted No. 3 Creighton to a 2-1 victory over the CSUN men's soccer team (1-1-0) Friday night in a non-conference match at Morrison Stadium. Papi Diouf and Steven Manios connected for a Matador goal in the second minute, but a pair of Blue Jay goals in the second half proved to be the difference.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the final minutes of regulation, CSUN starting goalkeeper Adam Hobbs made a tremendous save on a free kick from directly in front of net from about 20 yards. However, the ensuing play resulted in a corner kick and after that, a Creighton player hit the post on a shot. The rebound fell to Myles Englis, who beat Hobbs to the far post for the game winner.
Things looked good early for the Matadors. CSUN struck quickly, quieting the crowd in the second minute of action.
Following a throw in, Diouf made a hard run inside the 18-yard box up the right side. After a tackle from the Creighton defense, Diouf sprung back to his feet and slotted the ball to his left, where Manios knocked the ball into an open net for his second goal of the season. The strike was just the second goal Creighton allowed in the first half since the start of the 2014 season.
Hobbs made three saves in the first half and got some help from the crossbar on a shot from Fabian Herbers. Juan Fernando Samayoa picked up a yellow card for a challenge midway through the first half.
In the 58th minute, Creighton scored the equalizer when Herbers stretched the defense and found a cutting Ricky Lopez-Espin in the box.
In all, Creighton finished with 14 shots compared to just one for the Matadors. The teams combined for 14 fouls but Dean Wright and Jumoke Hutton saw the yellow card and Stuart Close will miss the next two matches after receiving a red card in the closing seconds. Hobbs finished with six saves in the match.
CSUN head coach Terry Davila took away several positives from the match despite the result.
"We snuck in a goal early and it was a good, unselfish play in the box. It was good to see Papi and Stevie connect on that opportunity and produce a goal together," Davila said. "Creighton got a little rhythm in the first half, executed well and made it difficult for us to keep the ball. In the second half, I thought we went toe-to-toe with them. We had some good opportunities and so did they. I want to commend them for a good game. Our boys just need to improve a little bit more and take this as a learning opportunity."
The Matadors remain in Omaha for their next contest, a meeting with Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. CT // 11 a.m. PT. The two teams played to a scoreless draw at a neutral site in 2014.
CSUN returns home on Friday, Sept. 11 to take on New Mexico at Matador Soccer Field with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. Two days later, CSUN hosts CSU Bakersfield for a 6 p.m. contest.
