NORTHRIDGE, CA---
With a 5-2 victory over Brazil, CSUN Baseball head coach Greg Moore and Team USA have advanced to the Super Round of the 2015 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) 18-U World Cup in Osaka, Japan. Team USA went 4-1 in pool play over the weekend and finished second in the pool to advance to the Super Round beginning Thursday.
Â
Moore, serving as pitching coach for the team, is coaching a staff that surrendered a mere eight runs over five games in pool play. Team USA outscored opponents 32-8 during that span and allowed three runs or less in all of the contests.
Â
The team earned 11-1 wins each against the Czech Republic (August 28) and Australia (August 31) including posting wins against Mexico, 5-1, on August 30 and Brazil on Tuesday. Team USA's only loss came to Japan, 3-0, on August 29.
Â
"We're getting better every two to three days," said Moore about Team USA's progress in international competition. "It's difficult to establish a common language on and off the field in such a short time but we're learning to play as a team on the field and move as one off of it."
Â
Despite competing in only three exhibition games prior to arriving in Osaka, Team USA has shown cohesion in such a short amount of time to produce a successful start in World Cup competition.
Â
"One of the Japanese translators said that he couldn't believe the players have a shared a dugout for just a few games before this tournament," added Moore. "As we move into the next round, the goal is to get better each day."
Â
In the Super Round, the two-time defending WBSC U-18 World Cup Champions, Team USA, are set to face a Korea team that finished first in Pool B with a 5-0 record. Other teams also competing in the Super Round include host Japan, Cuba, Australia and Canada.
Â
The remaining teams will battle it out in head-to-head competitions over a three-day span starting Thursday. The top two teams with the best records will compete in the championship game on Sunday, Sept. 6.
