Northridge, CA –
Reggie Theus Jr. has transferred to CSUN, Men's Basketball Head Coach Reggie Theus announced today. Theus Jr. is the son of the head coach and he comes to CSUN from the University of South Carolina. He will play for the Matadors starting with the 2016-17 season.
"Reggie is a versatile and athletic scorer. He has a very good understanding of team defense and a phenomenal basketball IQ," said Theus. "He's a very efficient player and this will be the first time in a while that he'll get to play a style of basketball that utilizes his ability to run the floor, finish around the basket and play up tempo basketball."
At USC, Theus Jr. was an Experimental Psychology major with a 3.2 GPA.
Theus Jr. is a 6'6" forward who played two seasons for the Gamecocks. This past season, he appeared in 13 contests. He scored a total of 11 points with eight rebounds, four steals and two assists in his career at the University of South Carolina. Theus Jr. was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended Fairfax High School. He was a Rivals.com two-star prospect as a senior.
Theus Sr. last coached Theus Jr. in AAU ball here in Southern California. The Theus father-son duo is the first such occurrence for the CSUN basketball program in a decade.Â
"I feel lucky to be able to coach my son," said Theus Sr. "He's always played well for me and we have a great relationship. When you talk about spending time with your son, I can't think of a better way to build your relationship than by playing together."
Theus Jr. is the latest transfer to join the Matadors for the 2015-16 season. UConn forward Rakim Lubin, University of Washington guard Darin Johnson, UNLV guard Kendall Smith and Texas A&M center Dylan Johns are all new faces at CSUN.
"I am super excited about this class," said Theus. "With the young players we already have plus our new transfers, the potential for our program is limitless. We have student-athletes on our team now that could have gone to bigger conferences and they chose to play for me at CSUN. That proves how excited we should be about where we're headed."
