Schonhofer Bartra Scores Matador Goal
En Español
OMAHA, Neb. --- On a hot and humid day at Caniglia Field, the CSUN men's soccer team (1-2-0) lost 4-1 to the Omaha Mavericks in a non-conference match. CSUN went into the half tied at 1-1 on a goal from Pol Schonhofer Bartra in the 44th minute, but the Mavericks struck three times within a nine-minute span to claim the victory.
"Our lack of mental and physical toughness showed in a 20-minute span in the second half," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said."There is a level of energy and physicality you must play with to succeed and we did not have enough of it."
The game was scoreless throughout most of the first half. Dean Wright had an early chance on goal that forced a save from the Omaha goalkeeper.
In the 35th minute, the Mavericks got a corner kick but the ensuing header went high over the crossbar. However, Omaha pulled ahead 1-0 on a long shot from Kevin Correa that evaded Hobbs' mitts, hit off the crossbar and caromed into the net in the 39th minute.
CSUN struck back in the 44th minute to tie the match. Schonhofer Bartra and Jules Cailliau played a delicate give-and-go up the left side of the pitch. Inside the box, Schonhofer Bartra lifted a shot at the near post that went over the goalkeeper's head and into the net.
The goal was the second of Schonhofer Bartra's career and his first since the 2013 season. Cailliau picked up his first career assist on the play.
About eight minutes into the second half, the Mavericks pulled ahead on a goal from Logan Mendez. Omaha worked the ball up the middle field and Mendez beat Hobbs to his left in the 53rd minute.
Omaha then struck for a pair of goals less than a minute apart. In the 61st minute, the Mavericks struck on a left-footed, curling shot that beat Hobbs to his left. Less than a minute later, Omaha added another as the Mavericks got a tap-in at the goal line off a back heel.
CSUN finished with nine shots and seven corner kicks in the match. Hobbs finished with four saves in just over 76 minutes of action and the team was also credited with a save. Kevin Marquez played the final 14 minutes in net.
Josh Christensen made five saves in net to post the victory. Omaha finished with 13 shots and six corner kicks.
The Matadors return home for their next match, a meeting with New Mexico on Friday, September 11. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Before the match, fans are invited to attend a Red Rally Fan Fair starting at 6 p.m. in the parking lot directly south of Matador Soccer Field. The match will also feature free admission for all first responders and military personnel with appropriate ID.
Editor's Note: The assist on the CSUN goal was changed from Manios to Cailliau after a review of the video replay.
