NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- A penalty kick in the 96th minute was all that separated New Mexico and the CSUN men's soccer team (1-3-0) Friday night in a non-conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Following a defensive 90 minutes, CSUN went down a man in the extra period before a foul in the penalty area lifted New Mexico to the narrow victory.
"New Mexico is a good team and we competed well with them all night," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "We were a little nervous in front of goal and were unlucky to not put one into the net. We have to rebound and focus on Sunday's match with a good CSU Bakersfield squad."
Friday night was a defensive stalemate between the Lobos and Matadors. The teams combined for just 19 shots and most of the action seemed to take place in midfield throughout the night. The Matadors had three shots on goal in the first half, two off the foot of Steven Manios, but none really threatened the New Mexico goalkeeper.
In the second half, New Mexico collected its two shots on goal midway through the period with Adam Hobbs making a pair of point blank saves. On offense, David Turcios had a near miss midway through the period in what amounted to CSUN's best chance.
In the overtime period, CSUN's Tanner Snedigar saw his second yellow card of the match and was sent off in the 93rd minute. Less than three minutes later, a CSUN foul gave Chris Wehan a shot from the penalty spot that he did not miss for his fifth goal of the season.
The teams combined for 24 fouls and Jumoke Hutton, Trevor Morley and Wehan also saw the yellow card. CSUN saw a pair of impressive season debuts from Jeremy Degraffenreidt and Andrew Rizeq. Both saw extended minutes and were able to positively impact the game.
CSUN returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 with a 6 p.m. contest against CSU Bakersfield. The match will feature a live video stream and a Spanish-audio broadcast with CSUN alumni Jose Avalos and Eduard Cauich calling the action.
