CSUN Women's Hoops Clipped in Overtime at Cal Poly

Sophomore Serafina Maulupe Scores 16 in Defeat for CSUN
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-16, 0-4 Big West) lost 66-62 in overtime at Cal Poly Thursday night in a Big West Conference game at Mott Athletic Center. Serafina Maulupe scored a team-high 16 points and Emily Cole added 12, but the Mustangs' Beth Balbierz connected on a 3-pointer with less than a second left in regulation to send the game into overtime where Cal Poly prevailed.Â
CSUN took a 56-55 lead with 47 seconds left in regulation on a 3-pointer from Katelin King. Channon Fluker and Maulupe then both went 1-for-2 from the free throw line. With the clock winding down, Balbierz heaved up a 3-pointer from the right wing that connected and sent the game into overtime.
The Mustangs scored the first four points of overtime and CSUN got back to within two points on a lay-up from Cole with 1:07 left in the extra period. Although Fluker hit a pair of free throws to draw CSUN back to within two with five seconds left, the Mustangs made all four of their free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.Â
The Matadors made a spirited comeback in the second half, erasing what was as large as an eight-point Cal Poly lead. CSUN won the third period 16-13 and the fourth 20-17 to force the extra period.Â
In the first half, CSUN fell behind 15-13 after the first period and trailed 28-22 at halftime. CSUN overcame a five-point deficit in the first period and a 10-point disadvantage in the second with its second-half performance.Â
The Matadors shot 25.8 percent (8-of-31) from the field in the first half, but raised their field goal percentage to 37.5 percent (12-of-32) in the second half. For the game, CSUN finished at 28.8 percent (21-of-73) compared to 35.3 percent (24-of-68) for Cal Poly.Â
Maulupe finished 5-of-16 from the field and added a season-high seven rebounds in 35 minutes off the bench. She also had three assists and a steal in the loss.Â
Cole finished 5-of-10 from the field and added two 3-pointers, two assists and two steals in 37 minutes of work. The game was her second straight in double-figures and the fifth of her career.
Fluker came off the bench to post her second career double-double. She finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes.Â
Nautica Morrow added seven points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench. King finished with eight points and three rebounds before fouling out in overtime.Â
Hannah Gilbert scored a game-high 25 points for Cal Poly in the victory.Â
The teams combined for 39 turnovers and 46 fouls on the evening. The Mustangs held a narrow 54-59 advantage on the glass and scored 32 points in the paint. CSUN posted 15 points off 20 Cal Poly turnovers and also had six fast-break points. The game featured seven ties and six lead changes.Â
CSUN Â returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 with a home game against Hawai'i. Tip off between the Matadors and Rainbow Wahine is set for 4 p.m. from The Matadome.Â
