Channon Fluker Scores Career-high 31 Points in Victory
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (3-16, 1-4 Big West) defeated Hawai'i (10-9, 3-3 Big West) 63-60 Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference game at The Matadome. Freshman Channon Fluker scored a career-high 31 points and added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the week as the Matadors avenged an earlier loss to the Rainbow Wahine in Honolulu.Â
The Matadors and Rainbow Wahine engaged in a back-and-forth affair that featured six ties and four lead changes. Hawai'i led for the majority of the contest, but it was the Matadors' play after halftime that led them to victory.Â
Trailing 30-23 at the break, the Matadors actually fell behind by 14 moments into the third period. From there, CSUN cut away at the Hawai'i lead behind a total team effort. With the score 39-25 in favor of Hawai'i and 7:32 left in the third period, Fluker scored four-straight points for the Matadors to bring them back to within 10 points.Â
Fellow freshman Nautica Morrow then scored five-straight points for CSUN to draw the score to 42-35 with 4:20 left in the period. A Fluker lay-up drew CSUN to within five points and another Fluker put-back and a jumper from Cheyenne Allen pulled the Matadors to within three points (46-43) after 30 minutes of action.Â
In the fourth period, the teams continued to battle and CSUN took a 49-48 lead on a lay-up from Fluker with 7:37 left in the game. Hawai'i got four-straight points to reclaim a 52-49 lead with 6:21 to play. Fluker then put CSUN back in front 55-52 with six-straight points and 4:16 left in the game.Â
Katelin King added a jumper to extend the lead to 57-52 and after Hawai'i responded with a basket, Emily Cole drained a 3-pointer to restore the six-point advantage (60-54). The Rainbow Wahine got back to within three points (60-57) with less than two minutes to play, but Fluker knocked down a pair of free throws and Jasmine Johnson added one as CSUN held on for the victory.Â
Fluker was a force all day for CSUN, finishing 11-of-17 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Five of her rebounds came on the offensive glass and she is now averaging 8.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the season.Â
Morrow was the team's second-leading scorer in the victory, posting nine points on 4-of-11 shooting. After starting the game 1-for-7, Morrow was 3-of-4 from the field in the second half and added two assists and a steal in 15 minutes off the bench.Â
King finished with seven points, three rebounds and an assist in 26 minutes and Cole had five points, three rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes of work. Allen posted six points, four rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 24-of-54 (44.4 percent) from the field for the game, including a blistering 15-of-25 (60 percent) in the second half. Hawai'i held a 45-32 advantage in rebounds, but turned the ball over 11 times. Those miscues translated into 14 points for CSUN, who also held a 34-26 advantage in points in the paint.Â
Kalei Adolpho and Megan Huff each had 12 points for the Rainbow Wahine. As a team, Hawai'i shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range for the contest. Just 10 days ago, CSUN lost to Hawai'i in Honolulu 77-50, but Saturday's victory was the Matadors' third straight at home in the all-time series.Â
CSUN returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 28 with a road game at UC Irvine. Tip off between the Matadors and Anteaters from the Bren Events Center is slated for 7 p.m.Â
