Ariana Wassmer, Savannah Horvath Hit Key Home Runs in Victories
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (17-13) defeated Yale 11-0 and Idaho State 5-2 Sunday as part of the Mizuno Classic at Matador Diamond. In the circle, Taylor Troost recorded a pair of wins after tossing a combined 11 innings with only two runs allowed while sophomore Savannah Horvath and senior Ariana Wassmer recorded big home runs as the Matadors defeated the Bulldogs and Bengals to conclude the tournament.Â
Troost (5-5) continued her solid weekend with a pair of impressive starts in the circle in both games Sunday. Against Yale, she tossed 6.0 innings of two-hit softball and followed that up with five innings of solid work against Idaho State. At one point during the games Sunday, she had a streak of 15.1 innings without allowing a hit and a 23-inning scoreless streak. She is now 5-5 on the year with a 3.93 ERA and a .269 opponent batting average in 67.2 innings of work.
Offensively, CSUN wasted no time in enacting some revenge on a Yale squad that beat them 6-2 Saturday. Horvath hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first over the fence in center field for her eighth home run of the season and set the tone for the game. Taylor Glover, who finished 3-for-5 in the game, then singled, moved all the way to third on a fielding error on the base hit and then scored on a single from Karlie Habitz.Â
In the second, Taylor Nate started the frame with a single, stole second and moved to third on an error on the play. She then scored on an RBI single by Tara Kliebenstein. With two outs in the innings, Glover would pick up an RBI single to score Sabrina Garcia, who had reached on an error. Another error in the field allowed Glover to score during the next at-bat and CSUN led 5-0 quickly.Â
In the third, Haileigh Gonzalez tripled to start the inning and then scored on a sac fly from Wassmer. In the fifth, Wassmer picked up another RBI single to score Mackenzie Babbitt.Â
The Matadors exploded for four runs in the seventh. Habitz picked up an RBI single, Wassmer added an RBI double, Nate reached on a fielding error but recorded an RBI and Daphne Pofek delivered a pinch-hit RBI. Pofek also tossed the seventh for CSUN, which played as the visiting team in the game despite being at home.Â
In the second contest Sunday, CSUN used a five-run third inning to get past Idaho State. The Bengals finished with 10 hits and two walks, but stranded 12 runners on base as Troost and Pofek continually worked out of tough jams.Â
Tara Kliebenstein started the third with an infield single and moved to second on a bunt single from Maylynn Mitchell. After Savannah Horvath reached on a fielding error and a fielder's choice left the bases loaded with one out, Haileigh Gonzalez delivered a two-run single to break the Matadors into the scoring column. She then trotted home on a three-run blast from Wassmer that came with two outs. The deep fly was the fourth of Wassmer's season, setting a new career high.Â
Troost worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the second with a strikeout and finished with four strikeouts and a walk in the win. Pofek got out of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth and pitched the final two innings to record her first save of the season and fifth of her career.Â
The two three-RBI performances from Wassmer tied a career high for the senior. Glover recorded her 25th career double and Gonzalez picked up her second triple on the season.Â
CSUN returns to action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Illinois at Matador Diamond. First pitch of game one is slated for 10 a.m.Â
