Taylor Glover Collects Six Hits to Raise Batting Average to .513
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (21-15, 1-1 Big West) split a Big West Conference doubleheader with Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond. In game one, the Matadors battled back to tie the game in the sixth and win 2-1 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Ariana Wassmer. In game two, the 49ers broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a two-run home run and a CSUN comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss.Â
Both games were pitchers' duels with each staff bringing some tough performances in the circle. In game one, Daphne Pofek (8-4) allowed a run in the first and nothing after for seven innings to earn the victory. She finished allowing four hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts. Her counterpart, Christina Clermont, allowed six hits and one walk with five Ks in 7.2 innings of work to take the loss.Â
In game two, the duel continued. For CSUN, freshman Taylor Troost allowed seven hits and two walks over seven innings of work while Skie Munoz, another rookie, allowed six hits and one run in six innings. Clermont tossed the seventh, allowing a run but earning the save.Â
CSUN pulled ahead 1-0 in the second inning of game two and saw the Long Beach State tie the game in the sixth and plate the winning runs in the seventh. The key at-bat came from LBSU's Nichole Fry, who hit a two-out, two-run home run off Troost (6-7) in the seventh to give the 49ers a 3-1 lead.Â
Senior Maylynn Mitchell hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to draw CSUN within one run, but the next two batters were retired to end the game.Â
Taylor Glover had another stellar day at the plate for the Matadors. She finished 3-for-4 in both games to raise her season batting average to .513 in 36 games and  117 at-bats. She also had a stolen base in each game and the six base hits give her 201 for her career, making Glover just the 10th player in program history to reach at least 200 hits for a career.
Game one's heroics for CSUN came down to a senior and a pair of freshmen. After Wassmer doubled to left with two outs, Haileigh Gonzalez delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to score pinch-runner Sabrina Garcia from second and tie the game.
In the eighth, Glover singled and moved to second a sac bunt from Katie Hooper. After Karlie Habitz dropped in a base hit that Glover could not score on, Wassmer lifted a ball into left field and Glover tagged from third to score the winning run in extra innings.Â
Tara Kliebenstein picked up an RBI double in the second inning of game two, driving in Mackenzie Babbitt all the way from first on the play. In addition to her home run, Mitchell was hit by three pitches over the two games and Taylor Nate recorded her 26th career stolen base and seventh of the season.
The two teams will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. to determine the series winner. The Matadors will then head to Honolulu to face the University of Hawai'i in a three-game series on April 8-9.Â
