NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (34-22, 14-7 Big West) defeated UC Davis 4-3 Saturday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. Katie Hooper delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to score Tara Kliebenstein in the bottom of the sixth to push CSUN ahead while Daphne Pofek tossed a complete-game with four strikeouts in the regular season finale.Â
The Matadors wrapped the three-game sweep of the Aggies and concluded the regular season with a 34-22 overall record and a 14-7 mark in Big West Conference play. CSUN's owned an RPI of 55 coming into the weekend and will now await its postseason fate when the NCAA Tournament field of 64 is announced on Sunday, May 15.Â
Sunday, CSUN had to rally past a dogged UC Davis team that did not go quietly all weekend. The Matadors struck first on Senior Day, getting a pair of RBI singles in the first inning. With two outs, Karlie Habitz drove in Taylor Glover and then Ariana Wassmer brought in Habitz to give CSUN a 2-0 lead.Â
After coasting through the first three innings, Pofek (19-8) ran into trouble in the fourth. The first two batters singled to set up a three-run home run and give UCD a 3-2 advantage. Pofek settled down and allowed just one total hit aside from her trouble in the fourth.
Trailing 3-2, Kliebenstein blasted a triple to center field with one out in the bottom of the fourth. She then came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Kliebenstein roped a double to center and then came around to score on a double from Hooper.Â
Kliebenstein and Habitz both had two hits in the victory and Hooper picked up her team-leading 13th double of the season. Glover stole her 22nd base of the year while Taylor Nate added her 13th of the season to set a new career high.Â
Before the game, CSUN honored its four seniors playing in their final game at Matador Diamond: Madalyne Handy, Allison Lacey, Maylynn Mitchell and Ariana Wassmer.Â
