NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Arizona State in an exhibition match on a hot Saturday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Cynthia Sanchez led the Matadors with two shots with one on goal while Jennifer Anderson, Marissa Favela and Avery DeWitt all had shots in the contest. Goalkeeper Jenna Koziol started the match and played the entire first half, collecting two saves, and Jovani McCaskill saw 65 minutes of action following halftime.Â
With an unrelenting sun above, the Matadors and Sun Devils battled in a close affair for 110 minutes. ASU held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the match along with a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Outshot 4-0 in the first half, the Matadors collected five shots after halftime with four attempts on goal. Arizona State was whistled for 15 fouls compared to CSUN's 10.Â
Battling the elements, the two teams jockeyed for position in the early going until the Sun Devils threatened in the 18th minute. After a corner kick, Jessica Raybe corralled the ball and registered a shot to the far post. With Koziol on the move near the net, Lindsay Kutscher stepped in and picked up a deflection. Moments later, Koziol earned a save off a long shot from Madison Stark to keep the match scoreless.Â
The Sun Devils finally broke through in the 32nd minute, taking advantage of a corner kick opportunity. Among a sea of players, Jemma Purfield found Angela Boyle who delivered a header to the back post and into the goal to give her team the 1-0 lead.Â
Koziol stopped another ASU attempt in the 36th minute, and the Matadors withstood a pair of corner kicks to stay within striking distance entering halftime.Â
The Matadors picked up the pace in the second half and earned their first shot of the afternoon off a free kick from Favela that goalkeeper Ashley March saved cleanly in the 50th minute.Â
Later in the period, the Matadors nearly evened the match off a long kick that DeWitt got a foot on from near the sidelines. The ball traveled near the ASU back post and bounced above a reaching March. Before a streaking Katelyn Von Meter could get to the loose ball, March secured the possession for Arizona State.Â
Anderson registered the Matadors' last shot in regulation, launching a long shot from above the box that March caught at the net.Â
Still a 1-0 match after 90 minutes of action, the teams continued to battle over two overtime periods. Sanchez earned a pair of shots in the 100th minute including an attempt that was saved by goalkeeper Sydney Day. Arizona State's Lara Barbieri recorded the only shot in the second overtime but the CSUN defense blocked the attempt near the right wing.Â
A total of 19 Matadors saw action in the contest with defenders Chloe Edwards and Kutscher playing the full 110 minutes. Along with her 45 minutes in net in the first half, Koziol saw 11 minutes of action as a field player in the second half.Â
With a pair of exhibition matches under their belt, the Matadors turn their attention to the regular season set to kick off next Friday. CSUN visits Long Beach State in its season opener in a rematch of last year's Big West Tournament quarterfinal. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. Â
