NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer Lia Peterson earned her first career conference honor, taking home Big West Freshman of the Week accolades on Friday.Â
A native of El Cajon, Peterson gave the Matadors 61 quality minutes off the bench in a come-from-behind victory over Long Beach State on Thursday, helping CSUN to a Big West regular season championship.Â

With the Matadors trailing 1-0 early in the second half, Peterson used a pass from senior Cassidy Imperial-Pham to find the back of the net through the defense and just inside the near post. Later in the half, Jordyn Canister hit the eventual game winner in the 75th minute to propel the Matadors to the 2-1 victory. Peterson finished with four shots, tying a season high, while totaling two shots on goal.Â
A true freshman, Peterson bookended the year with goals for the Matadors, scoring in the team's opener and finale to finish with five points and 20 shots with eight on goal. Peterson appeared in 18 overall matches with five starts.Â
CSUN closes the regular season with four total Big West player of the week awards earned as Peterson joins Riley Liebsack, who won three defensive player of the week awards, to receive the weekly honor.Â
The Matadors embark on the 2025 Big West Championship next week. With the regular season crown, CSUN will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and earn a bye to the semifinal round. The Matadors host the final two rounds of the tournament on Nov. 6 and Nov. 9 at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN's semifinal opponent will either be No. 4 seed UC Irvine or No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara with the start time set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
