SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-8-1, 2-5-0 BWC) fell to UC Santa Barbara (12-6-0, 5-2-0 BWC) 2-1 on Thursday evening at Harder Stadium. With the loss, the Matadors have been eliminated from Big West Tournament contention. Sophomore Bethany Fitzsimmons netted her fourth goal of the season to give CSUN a second-half lead but the Gauchos answered with back-to-back goals to take the match.
In a match they needed to have to stay alive in the conference tournament race, the Matadors battled the Gauchos to a scoreless first half. Amanda Delgado made a pair of saves early on in the period to help keep the top offensive team in the Big West at bay. Delgado stopped a shot from Katherine Sheehy in the 17th minute and prevented a goal off the foot of Shaelan Murison four minutes later. CSUN was out-shot 3-0 in the period and settled for just a corner kick in the opening stanza.
After halftime, the offense picked up as each teams earned corner kicks in the opening minutes. CSUN played the ball up the field in the 51st minute leading to a scoring opportunity. Moving past her defender, Alexis White streaked down the left side and into the box. White put a shot on goal from eight yards but rebounded the ball. She then found an open Bethany Fitzsimmons from five yards out. Fitzsimmons finished the play to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
The Gauchos though would fight back to even the match in the 63rd minute. After a pair of corner kicks, the Gauchos worked the ball into the Matadors' box. Kirsten Von Meter tried to clear out a cross that bounced into the center of the box, but Lynsee Voss recovered the ball and kicked in a shot from 18 yards that tucked inside the right post.
Following the equalizer, Voss would give her team the lead less than eight minutes later. With the ball deep in the box, Delgado moved off her post looking to clear out the ball. Instead, Voss and Sheehy tapped the ball to one another, leading to a goal from Voss that just snuck by Amanda Martin at the goal line.
Sydney Gilbert took the Matadors' final shot of the night in the 72nd minute but Hanna DwWeese made her fourth save to ensure a Gaucho victory.
On the backline, Christina Nixon and Lindsay Kutscher played the full 90 minutes in the match. Delagado finished with four saves in front of the net. Alexis White finished with a team-high two shots, with both on goal.
The Matadors were out-shot 12-5 in the match while the Gauchos posted a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. A total of 20 fouls were called in the match as the Matadors were whistled for 15 of them.
CSUN will wrap up its season on Sunday afternoon against Long Beach State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from George Allen Field.
