FULLERTON, Calif.—CSUN and Cal State Fullerton played to a 2-2 tie in the Big West Conference Men's Soccer opener for both squads Wednesday night.
"Tonight, was a great game between the past two Big West champions," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila.
Daniel Trejo charted his Big West Conference leading seventh goal of the year in the 24th minute to give the Matadors an early lead. Trejo scored from right side of Titans' net from just outside of the six-yard mark. Johnny Rodriguez picked up his third assist of the season on the play.
CSUN extended the advantage in the 38th minute. Jumoke Hutton took a Matadors' throw-in. His effort would end up on the foot of Giovanni Aguilar. Aguilar sent the ball towards the Cal State Fullerton (4-2-6, 0-0-1 BWC) net where Nicholas Grinde headed in his first goal of the season.
Mark Hernandez got the Titans on the board in the 61st minute. Hernandez took a Ross McPhie pass and scored from the left side just inside 18 to cut the CSUN lead in half. The Titans tied the score at the 67:37 mark when Samuel Goni converted a penalty kick for his fourth of the season.
CSUN threatened in the 82nd when a Rodriguez shot was saved by Paul-Andre Guerin. The rebound came back out to Trejo who had an attempt blocked by the Titans' defense. With just over five to go, a scramble in front of the Titans' goal resulted in a Wolfgang Prentice shot that was saved from close range by Guerin. The Matadors successfully defended a Titans' corner kick in the final minute of regulation which sent the match to overtime.
Cal State Fullerton would record a pair of corner kicks in the first two minutes of the first overtime. Both efforts were successfully defended by the Matadors. Rodriguez took the first CSUN shot of overtime 4:26 in when Rodriguez's attempt was saved by Guerin. On the ensuing Titans' possession, a Daniel Adoo shot was saved by Henrik Regitnig.
