CSUN Opens Big West Men's Soccer Play This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN opens Big West Conference play this week when the Matadors travel Wednesday night to Cal State Fullerton. Kick is set for 7 p.m. with links to the video stream and live stats being available on GoMatadors.com.

The Titans are 4-2-5 after defeating Loyola Marymount (1-0, Sept. 27) and San Francisco (4-0, Sept. 29) last week. The five ties that Cal State Fullerton recorded during the non-conference slate are the most recorded by a Big West team since 2014. Six of the 11 Titan matches this season have gone to overtime.

Paul-Andre Guerin was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 1 after being in goal for both wins last week. He has played all but 25:48 of the 1099:15 Titan minute in 2018. He is third in the Big West in saves with 36. Samuel Goni and Christian Pinzon have both scored three goals this season to pace Cal State Fullerton. Goni and Ross McPhie are tied for the team lead in points with seven.

This is the 48th time that CSUN and Fullerton are playing men's soccer with the Matadors leading the all-time series 23-18-6.

CSUN returns home Saturday night to take on No. 17/22 UC Davis. Coverage on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health is set for 7 p.m. The first 100 fans through the turnstiles will receive a Fandana. Saturday is First Responders/Armed Forces Day at Matador Field. First Responders Armed Forces Veterans who show the proper ID will receive free admission and can bring three guests.

UC Davis begins this week ranked 17th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, 21st in the College Soccer News Top 30, and 22nd in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25. The Aggies' RPI of 14 (released Sept. 30) is the best among any of CSUN's opponents on the Matadors' schedule.

UC Davis improved to 7-1-2 with a 2-1 overtime victory over Sacramento State last Saturday in a non-conference Causeway matchup between the clubs. Justin Wright was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 1. Wright scored both goals in the win over Sacramento State.
Adam Mickelson is tied with CSUN's Wolfgang Prentice and Johnny Rodriguez for sixth in the Big West in points with 10. Mickelson is tied for the league lead in assists (4) with teammate Robert Mejia, CSUN's Daniel Trejo, and one other player. He has score three goals this season.

UCD goalie Wallis Lapsley leads the Big West Conference in victories (7), goals against average (0.57), and saves (44). He is tied for the league lead in shutouts (4) with UC Irvine's Greg Patenaude.

Saturday's match is the 22nd time that the teams will playing against each other. UCD leads the all-time series 9-7-5 after the Aggies defeated CSUN 4-2 in the Big West Conference semifinals.
The Matadors compiled a 6-4 record during the non-conference portion of the schedule, winning twice against nationally ranked opponents in Cornell (No. 17) and UCLA (11/13).
