Matadors Face Road Test at Hawai'i This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (17-23) continues its road trip with a weekend series against Hawai'i. The three-game set kicks off on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 9:35 p.m. (PST). The series continues on Saturday at 9:35 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. A live stream courtesy of Big West.TV will be available for the first two games of the series while live stats will be provided throughout the series.Â

Looking at the Big West standings, the Matadors are three games out of first place but find themselves tied for seventh place with UC Davis at 5-7. UC Irvine leads the conference with an 8-4 record, followed by Cal State Fullerton (6-3), Hawai'i (7-5), Cal Poly (6-6), and UC Santa Barbara (4-5) and UC Riverside (4-5). Long Beach State is 3-6 and sits in ninth place.Â
CSUN dropped its sixth-straight game on Tuesday at Fresno State, 8-2. The Bulldogs hit three home runs in the first four innings en route to staking to an early six-run lead. Finishing with nine hits, the Matador lineup was retired in order just twice on the evening but CSUN left 16 runners on base in the ballgame. Senior Alvaro Rubalcaba collected three hits while freshman Brandon Bohning collected two hits and an RBI. Senior Albee Weiss notched a conference-best 47th RBI, and junior Trevor Casanova reached base four times and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.Â
On the pitching side, seniors Hayden Shenefield and Andrew Weston tossed scoreless outings in relief. In 16 relief appearances, Shenefield has tossed 17.1 innings and struck out 19 batters while posting a team-best 2.08 ERA. After missing the first six weeks of the season, Weston has registered a 2.19 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work.Â
In the nation, Weiss is fifth in home runs (15) and 18th in RBI. Senior Justin Toerner is 11th in triples with five this season while Casanova is 38th in doubles (15). CSUN is ranked eighth nationally with 54 home runs and 19th with a .463 slugging percentage.Â
In the Big West, Casanova remains the league leader in batting average (.372), hits (58) and doubles. The Matadors' backstop is also fourth in runs scored (31), on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.545). The league leader in home runs and RBI, Weiss is second in slugging (.623) and sixth in hits (47). As a team, the Matadors are first in the Big West in runs (253), RBI (240), extra base hits (136), total bases (645), hit by pitch (68), home runs and slugging percentage.Â
Junior right hander Walker Armstrong takes the mound on Friday for the Matadors followed by junior left hander Isaiah Nunez in game two. Armstrong (1-3) boasts a 3.75 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 60.0 innings while Nunez (1-0) is sporting a 3.27 ERA and 33 strikeouts in over 41.1 innings on the year. The tandem has started each weekend since the start of the Big West play.Â
The Matadors have faced the Rainbow Warriors 48 times in team history, posting 30 victories. The teams first met back in 1981, and have faced off 15 times since Hawai'i joined the Big West Conference in 2013 with the Matadors winning nine of those contests. The Rainbow Warriors took two of three games in the teams' last meeting at Les Murakami Stadium in 2015. CSUN won the series opener last season at Matador Field but Hawai'i bounced back with two wins to claim the series. Senior Nolan Bumstead is batting .382 (13-for-34) with a home run, two doubles and four RBI in his career against Hawai'i. Â

The Rainbow Warriors are 21-15 overall and just a game out of first place in the league standings. Despite a series loss last week at Cal State Fullerton, Hawai'i has already posted series wins over UC Irvine, UC Davis and UC Riverside this season. At Les Murakami Stadium, Hawai'i is sporting an impressive 15-7 record.Â
Junior Kekai Rios is fifth in the Big West Conference in batting with a .343 clip with 17 walks, 16 runs and 13 RBI. Sophomore Adam Fogel leads the team in RBI (24), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.483) and doubles (14) to go with a .287 batting average. Senior Johnny Weeks is tops in the nation in sacrifice hits with 19 while he is batting .291 with 16 RBI. Friday starter and junior right hander Jackson Rees (3-1) is sporting a 2.72 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Also starting this weekend, senior right hander Neil Uskali (6-2) has collected the team's most wins and produced a 4.12 ERA while junior left hander Dominic DeMiero has a 5.24 ERA and 2-4 record.Â
