From High School to College - A Summer Success Blog

In its fifth year, the Summer Success Program helps acclimate new Matadors to CSUN through six weeks of individualized academic support, weekly life skills workshops, exposure to the greater CSUN community and plenty of time on campus.
The second in a series of Summer Success Program blogs was written by Alexis White from the CSUNÂ Women's Soccer team.
Starting the summer bridge program was rather nerve-racking.
From just graduating high school in June, it seems so quick to be already starting college. After a hard week of packing we finally arrived and moved into the dorms and got a chance to meet my room and dorm mates. Later that evening we attended a welcome dinner.
It was nice seeing all different type of student-athletes come together to be informed about the Summer Success Program. Lindsey (Schantz) and the CSUN staff spoke very highly of the program and what it entails. After the dinner, we were able to go back to our dorms and prepare for the orientation the next day.
The orientation was fairly long but informative. We started off the day with breakfast and some icebreaker games which was very nice because all the athletes are kind and friendly. We were able to take a tour around the campus and become familiar with the  parts we will be around the most. After we had a few guest speakers inform us on CSUN policies and ways to succeed in college. Overall the orientation was very informative, being the next day was our first day of University 100 class.
The first day of University 100 was successful!
Professor Sharon Lim is very intelligent and formal. It is definitely an interesting transition from a high school class to a college class. After we attended structured study, which is a great use of time to get the work done from University 100 previously in the morning. The rest of the week was the same schedule, Â class then structured study however on Thursday we got to meet with our PLA's for the first time. My PLA gave me a planner and helped me figure out what type of learner I am.
On Friday we had a compliance workshop which was very informative on NCAA rules. Being that we attended this meeting we are excused from attending the next meeting. The rest of the day was for us to spend however we wanted.
Lastly, on Saturday we did a gardening workshop where we helped clean up and build planting stations for the CSUNÂ Garden. It was very nice to work as a team to get the work done quickly and efficiently.
Overall, the summer bridge program has many assets and I am excited to continue on.
