NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN head softball coach Tairia Flowers has announced the addition of John Barry to the Matadors' staff. Barry will serve as the Matadors' volunteer assistant coach.
Â
"We are thrilled to have John join our staff," said Flowers. "He has played and coached the game at a high level and comes to us with a lot of experience. He will be a great addition to our program."
Â
Barry comes to CSUN from Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills, Calif. where he served as an assistant softball coach.
Â
Barry played baseball at UCLA before being taken in the fourth round of the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft. Barry played in the Giants' chain for three seasons before leaving the professional ranks upon the conclusion of the 1988 season. Barry began his coaching career at Pepperdine where he was a member of Andy Lopez's baseball staff from 1989-91.
Â
In 2012, Barry started the SoCal Clutch 12U and 14U programs which competed at the PGF level until 2014 when the Firecracker Organization picked up the club. For the next three seasons, Barry worked with the Firecrackers 18u and 16u teams as a hitting coach, fielding coach, and third base coach.
Â
Since 2017, Barry has been the head coach and manager for the SoCal Athletics Softball Organization. He worked with the 12u, 14u, 16u, and 18u teams. 23 players Barry worked with in the SoCal organization have advanced to playing at the college level.
