CSUN Women's Soccer Sweeps Weekly Big West Awards
9/10/2018 1:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--- Coming off a pair of thrilling overtime victories, CSUN Women's Soccer swept the weekly Big West Conference awards as senior midfielder Marissa Favela took home Offensive Player of the Week while freshman goalkeeper Amanda Delgado was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Favela netted two golden goals in three days for the Matadors, helping CSUN knock off Pacific, 1-0, and Sacramento State, 2-1. Making her CSUN debut, Delgado earned her first career shutout in the win over the Tigers and notched another victory two days later against the Hornets.
Â
A native of Diamond Bar, Calif., Favela collected her first two goals of the season in dramatic fashion this past weekend.
Â
CSUN battled Pacific to a scoreless tie through 100-plus minutes of action before Favela finally came away with the game winner in double overtime last Friday. Playing the ball up the left wing, Christina Nixon delivered a cross deep inside the center of the box. After a couple of touches from players in the box, Favela cleaned up the play from less than five-yards out at the right post to win the match for the Matadors.
Â
Less than 48 hours later, Favela was golden again, this time against Sacramento State. With the match even at 1-1, Favela struck the back of the net in the 93rd minute. Capitalizing off a Hornet turnover, Favela scored the game winner over the head of the goalkeeper from above the the box.
Â
With her two golden goals, Favela now has four career game-winning strikes with three coming in overtime. Last season, Favela picked up a golden goal to defeat Utah Valley 2-1 (8/27/17).
Â
On the defensive side, Delgado made her presence known in her first collegiate matches this past weekend. A true freshman, Delgado allowed just one goal in over 197 minutes in between the pipes.
Â
Originally from Downey, Calif., Delgado posted nearly 105 minutes of shutout soccer against Pacific. She registered nine saves including eight in the second half. Saving five shots over the first 17 minutes of the second half, Delgado made a pair of acrobatic saves in the 51st and 63rd minute to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Delgado surrendered an early goal against Sacramento State on Sunday but bounced back by shutting out the Hornets the rest of the way. She picked up three saves in the match, two of which in the second half. The Matadors' defense also helped out Delgado by not allowing a shot over the final 22 minutes of the contest.
Â
Favela and Delgado are the first Matadors to receive a Big West Player of the Week award this season. The Matadors also swept the weekly awards once last season as Sydney Gilbert was named the Offensive Player of the Week while former Matador Jovani McCaskill received Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 23.
Â
The Matadors return to action this Thursday as they host Texas Tech under the lights at Matador Soccer Field. Kickof is scheduled for 7 p.m. The match will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
