Matadors Defeat UC Merced 3-1 in Non-Conference Action
1/11/2019 9:34:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Domanik Stratford had a career-high 10 kills as 12th-ranked CSUN Men's Volleyball used a variety of different lineups in a 3-1 non-conference victory over UC Merced at The Matadome.
With the 25-12, 20-25, 25-12, 25-17 win, the Matadors improve to 4-1 on the season while the visiting Bobcats drop their season opener.
KEY STATISTICS
• A season-high 12 players saw the court for CSUN as Stratford led all hitters in the match with 10 kills. Stratford hit an even .500 on 16 attacks while also posting four digs and a pair of blocks.
• Junior Ksawery Tomsia and senior Dimitar Kalchev each added eight kills in three sets of action. Tomsia, who hit .286, also added six digs and matched his career high with five aces. Kalchev hit .417, taking just 12 swings, and added four aces which upped his career total to 164.
• Redshirt freshman Taylor Ittner also played in three of the four sets, recording 27 assists to go with two kills, two digs and three blocks.
• As a team, the Matadors hit .319 while serving a season-high 12 aces which ties for 10th all-time in CSUN history.
• CSUN limited the Bobcats to .141 hitting as Christopher Calder led UC Merced with six kills on .364 hitting.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Give UC Merced credit, that team has improved from last year. They played well and forced us to come back strong in sets three and four. I thought we played high level volleyball at times and several individuals played well. Overall we fought through and won the match, now we'll turn our attention for Purdue Fort Wayne and Ball State next week."Â
SET 1
The Matadors dominated the opening set, hitting .833 to the Bobcats' .000. Leading 3-2 after a Kalchev ace, CSUN went on a 9-3 run to open up a 12-5 lead. The Matador lead remained seven (14-7) when a UCM service error propelled CSUN on 6-1 run boosting the lead to 20-8. A Tomsia ace set the Matadors up with set point at 24-10 and after the visitors saved a pair of set points, Stratford's kill sent CSUN to the 25-12 win.
SET 2
Campbell turned to his bench in set two and a largely untested group struggled to a .000 hitting clip with eight kills and eight errors on 24 attacks. Conversely, the Bobcats took advantage, hitting .286 in the 25-20 win.Â
SET 3
Leading 4-3 early on, the Matadors took control of the set with a 9-4 run which opened up a 13-7 lead. After the visitors trimmed the lead to five at 13-8, CSUN took advantage of a pair of Tomsia aces to take its largest lead 20-9. The Matador lead was at least 10 the rest of the way as CSUN cruised to the 25-12 win.
SET 4
Kalchev connected for half of his eight kills in the final set while also notching a pair of aces. After opening up a 10-5 lead, the Matadors watched as UC Merced put together a 4-2 run to close to within 12-9. But CSUN quickly built its lead back to 18-12 following a Tomsia kill and the Matadors went on to win by the 25-17 margin.
