Matadors Complete the Comeback in 3-2 Win at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Senior Dimitar Kalchev led a trio of CSUN hitters in double figures as the 10th-ranked Matadors overcame a two-set deficit to defeat No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne in a non-conference match Friday at the Gates Sports Center.
With the 17-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11 win, the Matadors improve to 5-1 on the season while dealing the host Mastodons (4-1) their first loss of 2019.
KEY STATISTICS
• Kalchev overcame a slow start to put down a team-high 15 kills on .333 hitting. The senior from Bulgaria was held without an ace for the first time this season but did match his career-high with 12 digs.
• Junior Ksawery Tomsia and redshirt freshman Daniel Wetter also reached double figures in kills with 14 and 13 respectively. Tomsia shattered his previous career-high by scooping up a match-high 15 digs while Wetter hit .522 on 23 swings to go with five digs and four blocks.
• Redshirt freshman Taylor Ittner equaled his season-high with 49 assists along with six digs and three blocks.
• After being out-hit .422 to .259 over the first two sets, the Matadors bounced back to hit .326 over the final two sets and wound up hitting .250 (53-21-128), slightly better the .235 (58-23-149) clip for Purdue Fort Wayne.
• Pelegrin Vargas led all hitters in the match with 23 kills for the Mastodons.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"It was a gutsy road win tonight. We struggled in the first two sets but overall I thought the match was pretty evenly played. We got some big swings at the end from Dimitar and Wetter and I thought Taylor's leadership was great."Â
SET 1
Trailing 9-7 in the early going, CSUN surrendered a a 3-0 run as the host Mastodons opened up a 12-7 lead. Following a Matador timeout, the hosts went on a 3-1 run to extend the lead to 15-8 forcing the Matadors to use their final timeout. CSUN couldn't get closer than six points the rest of the set as Purdue Fort Wayne claimed the 25-17 win.
SET 2
After being out-hit .542 to .192 in set one, the Matadors bounced back to hit .321 in the second set but still slipped into a two-set hole following the 25-22 setback. Trailing by as many as four (16-12), CSUN put together a 3-0 run, capped by a Tomsia-Paul Rzepniewski block to cut the lead to one. The Matadors battled back to knot the score at 18-18 and were still even at 19-19 when Purdue Fort Wayne closed the set on a 6-3 run to seal the 25-22 win.Â
SET 3
Needing a win to stay in the match, CSUN trailed 8-4 after 12 points. A Tomsia ace capped a 3-0 Matador run which cut the lead to 12-11. After a Mastodon timeout, CSUN outscored the hosts 8-4 over the next 12 points to open up a 19-16 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne would cut the lead to one at 21-20 and again at 22-21 before Wetter's kill fueled a set clinching 3-1 run in taking the set 25-22.Â
SET 4
Looking to build on the momentum of set three, the Matadors raced out to a 3-1 lead and still led 8-6 following a Kalchev kill. Leading by as many as three points, CSUN took advantage of a Mastodon hitting error and a Kalchev kill to extend the lead to 19-14. But the hosts put together a 5-2 run to pull within 21-19 before another Wetter kill ended the run. The Matador lead was still one (22-21) when a Purdue Fort Wayne service error was followed by a Ptaszynski ace and a Tomsia kill and CSUN forced a decisive fifth set following the 25-21 win.
SET 5
The teams traded sideouts early in the fifth before the Matadors used kills from Wetter, Kalchev and Ittner to take a 7-5 lead. A Rzepniewski-Ittner block out of a Mastodon timeout pushed the lead to 8-5 before the hosts battled back to within 9-7 when Tomsia's attack went long. A Rzepniewski kill kept the margin at three (11-8) before two straight Mastodon points forced a CSUN timeout. A kill by Wetter and a Purdue Fort Wayne hitting error coming out of the timeout gave the Matadors the margin they needed to close out the 15-11 win.
MATCH NOTES
CSUN improves to 11-2 all-time in the series with Purdue Fort Wayne and remain a perfect 5-0 in matches played in Fort Wayne ... The Matadors also improve to 3-1 in five-set matches this season.
